The Best AI Roleplay Apps in 2026, Tested Side by Side
Roleplay apps split into two camps: giant character libraries with a chat box, and platforms that treat a scene as something you can see, hear and share. We ran the same fantasy arc and the same memory test on seven apps, captured their public UIs, and generated the comparison art on Netwrck’s RA1 generator.

Netwrck
Best for: people who want the roleplay to leave the text box.
You can talk to a character one-on-one, drop several characters plus friends into a shared room, generate the scene with RA1, then turn a portrait into a talking clip. That stack — chat, group, stills, lipsync — is the actual product, not a side quest. Catalog is smaller than Character.AI or Janitor. We are the vendor; treat the self-score accordingly.
Character.AI
Still the default recommendation for anyone who has never used an AI character. Onboarding is frictionless, the library is enormous, and c.ai+ (~$9.99/mo as of Aug 2026) buys voice calls, fewer ads and better memory. Filters are strict, adults-only since late 2025, and there is no real art or group-room layer.
Janitor AI
The volume play: 18+ library, optional JanitorLLM for free, or bring your own OpenAI/Claude/DeepSeek key. Janitor+ is about $12.99/mo for ~45k context. Setup friction is the tax. No talking-avatar pipeline, no shared rooms with friends.
Chai
A mobile feed. Swipe a bot, chat, move on. Fine for short sessions; shallow for long arcs. Free tier is message-capped. The company site talks exaflops; the app talks entertainment. Those are different products sharing a brand.
SpicyChat, SillyTavern, Replika
SpicyChat is the most productized adult RP option and now ships group + lorebook + voice in the chrome. SillyTavern is the power-user frontend — you bring the model. Replika is one persistent companion with a 3D body, not a cast.
How we tested
Same three scenarios as our Character.AI alternatives piece: 30-turn fantasy arc, 20-minute memory probe, one ambiguous user line. Screenshots are public homepages captured August 2026; Janitor’s catalog 403’d without a login, which we left in. Pricing moves. Netwrck is ours.
