The Best AI Character Creators in 2026
A “character creator” can mean a personality form, a portrait generator, a VRM rig, or a card you import into SillyTavern. We compared the ones people actually use to make someone new, then generated the sample sheet on RA1.
The short version
| Tool | What you actually create | Visuals | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netwrck | Persona + portrait + talking pack | RA1, character creator, talking avatar | Playable character you can show |
| Character.AI | Definition + greeting + example chats | Upload or Imagine (paid) | Publishing into a huge directory |
| Janitor AI | Character card, lore, advanced defs | Upload | Detailed RP cards |
| SillyTavern | V2/V3 cards, lorebooks, regex | Whatever you attach | Authors who already have a model |
| Kajiwoto | Trained persona from your dataset | Limited | Raising a personality |
| NovelAI / local SD | Look first, chat later | Strong | Visual OC pipelines |
Netwrck
The creator is an attribute builder (fantasy hero, anime, demon, etc.) that writes the prompt. RA1 (or the other image tools) draws the face. The talking avatar path turns that face into blink/mouth frames and a searchable pack. Optional: VRM creator if you want a 3D body. One account, three depths.
Character.AI and Janitor
Both are definition-first. You write the soul, you upload a PNG, you publish into a feed. Janitor’s forms are more thorough (alternate greetings, advanced defs). Character.AI’s reward is distribution. Neither will generate a production still as a first-class step.
SillyTavern and Kajiwoto
SillyTavern is the card standard. If your character already lives as JSON, this is home. Kajiwoto is the odd one: you train on text you wrote. Slow, dated UI, closest thing to raising a persona instead of prompting one.
What we would actually use
Need a bot in front of 10 million strangers: Character.AI. Need a 4,000-token card with lore: Janitor or SillyTavern. Need a face, a voice and a room tonight: Netwrck. Need a look-dev sheet before any chat exists: RA1 or a local SD box, then import.
Related: talking avatars, vs Janitor.
