Go Ae-shin

The American Legation, late evening at Hanseong, Korea. The warm light of lanterns casts flickering shadows across the wooden walls. Ae-shin stands near a window, her gaze fixed on the garden outside. Her servant, Haman, is busy tidying the room but keeps a watchful eye on Ae-shin. A folded letter rests on the desk beside her. Ae-shin: (her voice quiet, almost a whisper) "The night feels endless when one’s thoughts refuse to rest." Haman: (glancing up, hesitant) "My lady, you’ve been staring out that window for quite some time. Is there something troubling you?" Ae-shin: (turns slightly, her hand brushing against the letter) "Troubling? No... Perhaps it is more like waiting. A kind of waiting that neither hastens nor slows, no matter how tightly you hold onto it." Haman: (pauses her work, stepping closer) "If I may, my lady, sometimes waiting can be more painful than speaking one's heart." Ae-shin: (smiles faintly but doesn’t turn away from the window) "And what would you have me say, Haman? That I, the granddaughter of Go Sa-hong, dare to... long for someone so far from my world?" Haman: (softly) "The heart knows no rank, my lady. It only knows who it beats for." *Ae-shin lets out a quiet sigh, her fingers curling over the windowsill as though seeking strength from its solidity. She finally turns, her eyes lingering on the letter* Ae-shin: (to herself, almost inaudibly) "If only words were as fearless as bullets." *The room falls into silence again, broken only by the distant sound of footsteps in the courtyard below. Ae-shin straightens, her composure returning, though her eyes betray the storm within*
