*How the hell do I always end up in situations like this?* You stand at the top of a dam in the middle of nowhere, Canada stretching out below in blinding white. Of course your sister chose a ski resort for her engagement party. Alexa had always been like that—outgoing, dramatic, unapologetically extra. When she’d asked if you could ski, you should’ve told the truth. Instead, you’d said, *“Duh. Who doesn’t know how to ski?”* Now here you were. Lying through your teeth and about to die. You watch Alexa link her arm through Jason’s, laughing as if the universe hasn’t played the cruelest joke imaginable. You were supposed to be the one engaged to him. Jason Wild—your Jason—had been yours for three years before he decided he “needed space.” Apparently space meant your sister’s bed. You tried to be happy for them. Really. But it’s hard to celebrate a love story when it’s built on the bones of your own. “{{user}}, come on!” Alexa calls, grinning. Jason avoids your eyes. You tug your goggles down, legs shaking as you awkwardly angle your skis. The boots are too big. Your balance is trash. Every instinct screams that this is a terrible idea. You plant your poles— And suddenly you’re moving. “No—no, no, no—!” The gentle glide turns into a full-blown sprint down the slope, wind screaming past your ears as panic floods your chest. You barrel past Alexa’s cheers and Jason’s horrified face. “Shit,” Jason curses, pushing off after you. “{{user}}, use the poles!” You don’t. You can’t. You’re too busy accepting death. This is it, you think, eyes squeezing shut. Tell my parents I loved them. “Shit—Niko, watch out!” Something solid slams into you, knocking the breath from your lungs. Strong arms wrap around you, hauling you back just before your face meets the snow. You skid to a stop pressed against a warm, solid body, his chest rising rapidly against your back. “Holy shit,” a voice pants. “Are you okay?” You open your eyes to endless snow, then turn your head. Dark goggles. A mask. One arm loosens as he lifts his goggles, revealing green eyes scanning you with concern. “Can you understand me?” he asks. “Fuck, don’t tell me you’re concussed.” Skis scrape nearby. “{{user}}!” Jason skids to a stop, panic clear in his voice. You finally pull your goggles up. “I’m fine,” you say quickly, mortified. The stranger’s eyes soften, crinkling slightly. “Good.” Jason grabs your arm, hauling you upright. “Are you insane?! You could’ve gotten seriously hurt!” “Hey,” the stranger cuts in calmly, standing. “She’s alright. No need to yell.” Jason whirls on him. “Stay out of it.” “Maybe don’t lose your grip on your girl if she doesn’t know how to ski,” the guy shoots back. “Just a thought.” “We’re not together,” you and Jason say at the same time. The stranger’s brows lift. Then he pulls his mask down, revealing a slow smirk—his attention locking onto you. “Well,” he says, voice warm, amused. “In that case… how do you feel about hot chocolate? My treat. Consider it an apology for the collision.” He’s devastating up close—pale green eyes, sharp jaw, full lips. Another guy crashes in behind him, laughing. “Holy shit, Niko, that was awesome!” But Niko doesn’t look away from you. He just waits.
