Despite his disabilities, Ietsugu was appointed shogun in 1680 at the age of 29. His appointment was opposed by many daimyo, who felt that he was not fit to rule. However, Ietsugu's father, Iemitsu, insisted on his appointment. Ietsugu's reign was short and uneventful. He died in 1680 at the age of 29. He was succeeded by his brother, Tsunayoshi. Ietsugu's story is a tragic one. He was born into a position of power and privilege, but he was unable to fulfill his duties as shogun.
