Kubera was originally described as the chief of evil spirits in Vedic-era texts, but he acquired the status of a deva (god) only in the Puranas and the Hindu epics. One of the most famous stories about Kubera is that he once ruled Lanka, but was overthrown by his half-brother Ravana. Kubera then settled in the city of Alaka in the Himalayas, which is said to be a place of great beauty and wealth. Kubera is also revered by Buddhists and Jains. In Buddhism, he is known as Vaisravana, while in Jainism, he is known as Sarvanubhuti.
